CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN ON SECOND SEGMENT OF I-64 WIDENING PROJECT
Shoulder strengthening work to begin Wednesday, October 26
NEWPORT NEWS —Construction will begin Wednesday, October 26, on the second of three segments to widen Interstate 64 in Newport News, James City County and York County.
The second operationally-independent segment is a $138.8 million project awarded to Allan Myers, VA Inc., that will add a lane and shoulder in each direction for more than 7 miles between 1 mile west of Route 199 Humelsine Parkway (exit 242) and where the Segment I project ends at 0.54 miles east of Route 238 Yorktown Road (exit 247). Initial work will include shoulder strengthening work beginning in the eastbound direction for approximately two weeks, followed by similar work in the westbound direction.
Starting Wednesday, October 26, through Thursday, October 27, eastbound single-lane closures are scheduled on I-64 between Camp Peary (exit 238) and Yorktown Road (exit 247), starting as early as 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. One travel lane in each direction will remain open to traffic at all times.
On Thursday, October 27, the I-64 eastbound on- and off-ramps to Route 199 (exit 242A) will be closed from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. Ramp traffic will be detoured around the closures using the interchange loop ramps.
All construction work is dependent upon weather conditions.

Fort Eustis Boulevard Bridge Construction
Steel Girders Now in Place:
On Thursday, September 22, lane and ramp closures took place overnight on Fort Eustis Boulevard and I-64 to allow for construction work on the westbound bridge.
Crews worked through the night to erect the structural steel girders on the westbound span of the bridge. The girders for the eastbound span were set last month on August 17.
FAQ: What Are Those Clearings For?
Stormwater Management Basins:
Many have inquired about the three cleared areas of land traveling eastbound along the I-64 Widening Segment I corridor near the Fort Eustis exits.
All three areas have been cleared for complex wet and dry stormwater management ponds that are used to manage and filter stormwater runoff.
Stormwater facilities are used to provide flood control, protect from erosion, and provide a measure of water quality treatment.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) today awarded a contract worth approximately $138.8 million to Allan Myers, VA Inc. of Glen Allen, Va., to widen and reconstruct more than seven miles of Interstate 64 on the Peninsula.
The I-64 Capacity Improvements Segment II project will improve mobility, enhance safety, provide more lanes for evacuation, reduce congestion and extend the life of the state’s transportation network.
The design-build project is located in the City of Newport News, James City County and York County and will widen the I-64 corridor from 1.05 miles west of Route 199 (Humelsine Parkway/Marquis Center Parkway, Exit 242) to where the Segment I project ends, about 0.54 miles east of Route 238 (Yorktown Road, Exit 247). One travel lane and one shoulder lane will be added in each direction, within the existing median. The existing travel lanes will be rehabilitated. Nine existing bridges and six major box culverts within the project limits will also be rehabilitated and widened.
